Get Your Kids Into Reading This Summer {+giveaway}

Summer has officially hit and school is officially out. Now we need to find fun activities to keep the kiddos occupied.

 

It’s so easy to stick a tablet in their face, put on a movie they’ve watched 1,001 times, and walk away. But, do you really want that to be how your child spends their summer?

 

One great (non-technological) hobby for your kids that’s great all year long, but especially in the summertime, is reading!

 

Sometimes, getting absorbed into just one good book, can spark a passion for reading that will last a lifetime. Today I’m sharing some tips and tricks on how to get your kids into reading. Also, there’s a giveaway for a super cute book at the end of this post!

#1 – Make It A Fun Experience — Anyone can make their child read, but that doesn’t mean they’ll enjoy it. Typically, when you force someone to do something it takes the fun out of it, right?! Kids are no different! So, ask your child what they want to read. Share your favorite childhood books with them, tell them about all the different genres, most of all, make it FUN.

#2 – Reading Time = Bonding Time — Reading a book right before bed, after school, or any time in between can be a great way to get some extra quality/bonding time in with your little one(s). Kids grow up fast so it’s a great idea to take advantage of the opportunity of reading with them before they grow up and want to do it all by themselves.

 

#3 – Picture (Perfect) Reading — This is a great tip; especially for younger readers. Most kids are very visual, so what better way to get them into reading than with picture books?! That way they can see the character they’re reading about as opposed to trying to imagine it in their heads.

 

#4 – Keep Calm And Go To The Library… — Kids love feeling independent and grown-up. A great way to offer a little taste of independence is to take them to the library to get their very own library card. I remember getting my very own library card when I was about 5 or 6 and I felt like such a “big kid!” Also, going to the library means free books and it’s a great teaching tool for responsibility; when it comes to returning the books on time.

#5 – Lead By Example — You know how the old saying, “Monkey see monkey do?” Well, that applies here, too. If kids see their parents’ reading, they’ll be intrigued and want to try it out for themselves. Next time, try and bring a book to read with you to the doctors office instead of whipping out your phone and checking Facebook. Show your kids that you can be entertained by something other than a screen! You might even find yourself learning a lesson or two in the process.

 

 

I hope these five quick tips were even the slightest bit helpful to some of y’all out there! Reading is such a wonderful thing and having the freedom, ability, and means to read is such a blessing that no one should take for granted.

  2. Here are a few more suggestions to keep kids reading during the summer. Most public libraries have summer reading programs. Sign the kids up, keep a reading log, enjoy special events that promote the summer reading theme, and maybe earn some prizes. Many bookstores have special story times and some have book giveaways when you read a certain number of books and keep reading logs during the summer. Happy reading!

  33. I would love to express to yoeu all that be it I win I will share this book with all my grandchildren,and the niece’s and nephews and all of the many children whom come over to visit.this would be a great and awesome delight and joy.
