The surface of the earth rotates on its axis at a speed of 1,000 miles per hour

If you ask any one in my family they’ll probably tell you, “Yep, Edye is a huge tree hugger.” 

Not gonna lie, that statement is pretty accurate. I’ve always loved the Earth and have wanted to take care of it. This is the only planet we have to live on! I mean Mars is kinda far away and is there even life on it? I’ll have to call NASA and get back to you…  Anyways, here some of my favorite ways to help our beautiful planet.

Pick Up Trash

This is something that I do pretty often. If I see a lone grocery bag lying in the Target parking lot, I’m probably gonna pick it up. Is this the most sanitary thing? No. Ideally you should wear gloves, but desperate times call for desperate measures. If you really want help reduce the waste that’s cluttering our planet and flying into our oceans, have a “pick up the trash party.” This is a great way to give back to your community! Go to your local park or even your own backyard with a friend (and gloves!!) and pick up the loose trash you see. You really are making a difference by doing this.

 

Turn Off The Faucet

This is something I started about 2 years ago and haven’t looked back. IL State University calculated that you and your family could save 10 gallons of water a day by doing this. Not only will you be helping the planet out, but your water bill will be lower too!

 

Plant A Tree

Not only are trees beautiful, but they’re super beneficial to the environment! They can live over 100 years and are pretty easy to grow.

“One acre of trees annually consumes the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to that produced by driving an average car for 26,000 miles. That same acre of trees also produces enough oxygen for 18 people to breathe for a year.” – New York Times

 

Recycle

This is probably something most of us do; which is great! But, there’s so many things that can be recycled that aren’t.

Common things that CAN be recycled:

  • Magazines
  • Tissue boxes
  • Toilet paper / Paper towel rolls
  • Shredded paper (in a plastic bag so it won’t fly away!)
  • Pizza boxes
  • Metal & Tin food containers (like what green beans come in) washed out.
  • Soap bottles

That’s just a few things to give you guys an idea 😉

 

Go to the car wash

Let’s keep it real: Car washing is hard work. Did you know that going through the car wash instead of washing your car yourself can help save the environment?

“Professional car washes are often more efficient with water consumption. If everyone in the U.S. who washes their car themselves took just one visit to the car wash we could save nearly 8.7 billion gallons of water.” – Source

  1. I did not know it was more enviromentally friendly to go to a carwash rather than wash my car myself! I’m really good at turning taps off though and get annoyed when other people don’t turn them off while they’re brushing their teeth haha

  6. Wow I did not know that using a car wash was more efficient–it does make sense though!
    I don’t eat much meat which aids the environment in many ways. I also use reusable bags when I go shopping and I don’t turn on lights unless I have to!

  9. I used to be a bit of a treehugger myself but I think you get so discouraged when other people aren’t interested in helping. This post has really reminded me what I was doing was helpful though 🙂 I’m really concerned with fashion’s impact on the environment so even if my clothes are ripped, stained etc I still give them to charity shops as they can use them to stuff mattresses in third world countries etc if they’re unsellable rather than putting them in the bin where they can degrade in landfills x

  16. A great post, Edye. I am the tree hugger in my family as well and they used to laugh at my suggestions but now practise most of the above. I live in a city where they take their recycling very seriously. We even have a separate bin for food scraps. Sometimes hard to manage but it’s so worth it. A pleasure to find your beautiful blog 🙂

  25. Really great post! We recycle so much in our house that it actually cuts back on our trash bill, too. Our trash collector charges per can. They provide the cans and we have a very large can, but I would absolutely need at least 2 of these cans if not more based on the amount of recyclables we produce. But we recycle it, for sure. And living in NY, we also have redeemables. We pay a 5 cent surcharge on every plastic bottle, glass bottle, and can that contain beverages. I turn in my redeemables about once a month and get a refund of about $15-20 each time! These little things are so important for our environment!

  27. Loving the post! I actually recycle and always encourage others to do so. Also, there is an annual trash picking event in our country in which every town goes trash picking around their neighbourhood, parks and so on and on. It’s super fun and good for the Earth as well 🙂

  28. Nice post. However, the best thing you can do to save the planet is to stop eating animals and animal products – since more than 70% of all the worlds fresh water is being used for animal agriculture and animals agriculture is responsible for more CO2 than all the worlds traffic (including air traffic) combined… plus the rainforest is cut back because more space is needing to grow soy to feed the animals etc. etc. etc. watch Cowspiracy if you want to know more 🙂

  30. Awesome tips! I definitely agree that we should save the planet. I always tell people (my friends not random strangers haha) to do things, or else they will die …cuz you technically indirectly kill yourself by killing the planet. Sometimes it works, and sometimes my friends just ignore me haha

  33. You shared some useful AND easy-to-follow tips and that’s amazing because some people still think that being eco-friendly takes a lot of work. Through these tips you’re showing us that we can actually make a difference from our own daily habits. 🙂
    As for your question I always turn off the faucet and encourage my family to do so. The same goes for mobile charges: sometimes my mum leaves the charger plugged and I I remind her that’s not good, haha.

  36. Being green is one of my favorite things. I started more seriously in college and I have ever since been growing the ways I try to be greener. We recycle everything we can, but often times pizza boxes with grease cannot be recycled, and shredding in a bag cannot be taken certain places because the bags interfere. So it’s important to check locally how it can be done! 🙂 We recycle, we carpool to work, we eat organic or local when possible, I reuse mailers etc, we use 80-85% organic or chemical free hygiene/beauty products, and thrift/buy used a lot! 🙂 Great post! Glad to see more younger people who are interested in helping out the planet! You’ll survive, I was called, “tree” in one of my high school classes because I was more liberal (especially environmentally) than my classmates. LOL XO – Alexandra

  39. Wow, this is awesome! I love that your 16 and already care for the Earth! I’m really into upcycling. Although I try to precycle always, I’m like you and I find occasional things on my walk, so rather than recycle, sometimes I like to turn them into creative things. I also try to reduce the amount of electricity I use and yes, turn off the faucet when I don’t need it.

  41. I feel like I am pretty conscientious about doing little things here and there, but it is always nice to be reminded, and I didn’t know about the car wash thing. So next time my husband yells at me for spending $10 on a car wash I can tell him I’m helping to save the planet, He never has a comeback for that!   43. I really want to get a group together to pick up trash… so many people litter near our road and often we have issues with wind blowing over trash cans so trash goes everywhere. Thanks for linking up at #SustainableSundays!
